              example 1: Add `438.90, `185.65 and `155.85. 1 2 2 1
              Solution: Arrange the given amounts in columns and then ` 4 3 8 . 9 0

                            add as shown alongside. ` 1 8 5 . 6 5
                            Hence, the required sum = ` 780.40. + ` 1 5 5 . 8 5

              example 2: Subtract `197.85 from `321. ` 7 8 0 . 4 0

Solution: Arrange the given amounts in columns. As there 11 10 9
                            are no paise in the amount of `321, we put 00 in 2 1 0 10 10
                            place of paise. Then carry out simple subtraction ` 3 2 1 . 0 0
                            as shown alongside. – ` 1 9 7 . 8 5

                            Hence, the required difference = `123.15. ` 1 2 3 . 1 5

example 3: Mr Gupta purchased a pair of shoes worth `2256.75, a shirt worth
`1353.25, a pair of trousers worth `1734.50 and a tie worth `500.75. How much
money did he spend in all?

              Solution:

                                                                                1 1 1 2 1

                            Money spent on a pair of shoes = ` 2 2 5 6 . 7 5
                            Money spent on a shirt = ` 1 3 5 3 . 2 5

                            Money spent on a pair of trousers = ` 1 7 3 4 . 5 0
                            Money spent on a tie = + ` 5 0 0 . 7 5
                            Total amount spent on all the items = ` 5 8 4 5 . 2 5

Hence, Mr Gupta spent `5845.25 in all.

example 4: Mr Verma had `7000. He spent `4865.75 on buying a table and two
chairs. How much money is left with him?

              Solution:

                                                                              9 9 9 9
                                                                          6 10 10 10 10 10
                            Total amount with Mr Verma = ` 7 0 0 0 . 0 0
                            Money spent by him = – ` 4 8 6 5 . 7 5

                            Money left with him = ` 2 1 3 4 . 2 5

Hence, the amount of `2134.25 is left with Mr Verma.

Madhav goes to buy a new bicycle in exchange for his old one. The price of the new
bicycle is `8,400 and the price of his old bicycle in exchange is `2,359. How much money does he
