              Data

              Information collected in the form of numerical figures is called data. By presenting it
              in an organised way, meaningful information can be gathered from it.

              Organising Data

              Data can be organised in a table using tally marks which is a quick way of keeping
              track of numbers or observations in groups of five.

              We use vertical line(s) (|) to represent tally marks. We draw one vertical line (|)
              for every observation (number). For upto four observations we draw four vertical
              lines and the fifth observation is represented by a line running diagonally over the
              previous four vertical lines.

               Observations                  1             2            3            4            5            6
               tally marks                    |           ||           |||         ||||                           |

              Look at the following table. It represents class IV students who like different fruits.

                            Fruits tally marks Number of students

                            Apple                               ||||                                4
                            Mango                                                                   10

                           Banana                                  |||                              8

                           Orange                                   |                               6
                            Papaya                              ||||                                4

                          Pineapple                             |||                                 3

              Now, consider the following questions and their answers by observing the above table.
              1. How many students like banana? ________________
                                                                                                        8
              2. Which fruit do the most students like? ________________
                                                                                                      Mango
              3. Which fruit is liked by the least number of students? ________________
                                                                                                    Pineapple
              4. Which fruits are liked by an equal number of students? ________________
                                                                                               Apple and Papaya
              example: A group of children went to the zoo with the class teacher. After visiting
              the zoo, the children were asked about their favourite animal and their responses
              were noted down as given here:

                  Lion Tiger Elephant Monkey Bear Monkey Zebra Elephant
                  Zebra Bear Elephant Tiger Monkey Lion Lion Tiger
