subtraCtion word Problems
example: The population of a town is 83,426. If there are tth th H T O
48,967 males, how many females are there in the town?
12 13 11
Solution: Total population of the town = 83,426
7 2 3 1 16
Number of males = 48,967 8 3 4 2 6
Number of females = 83,426 – 48,967 – 4 8 9 6 7
= 34,459 3 4 4 5 9
Thus, there are 34,459 females in the town.

first month was `1,92,358, then find the sale for the second month.
addition and subtraCtion together
To solve problems that involve both addition and subtraction, we first perform addition
and then perform subtraction.
example 1: Solve: 32,345 + 25,361 – 23,694.
Solution: We first find the sum of 32,345 and 25,361 and then find the difference
between the sum obtained and 23,694 as shown below.
tth th H T O tth th H T O
1 6 10
3 2 3 4 5 5 7 7 0 6
+ 2 5 3 6 1 – 2 3 6 9 4
5 7 7 0 6 3 4 0 1 2
Thus, 32,345 + 25,361 – 23,694 = 34,012.
