1. Multiply the following.
(a) tth th H t O (b) tth th H t O (c) tth th H t O
3 7 2 4 6 7 8 2 7 2 8 9
× 3 × 7 × 9
2. Find the product of the following.
(a) 1234 × 4 (b) 6169 × 3 (c) 2341 × 4 (d) 7641 × 7
(e) 9811 × 9 (f) 8765 × 5 (g) 9874 × 8 (h) 6874 × 6
Multiplication by a 2-Digit nuMber
Let us first revise the multiplication of a 3-digit number by a 2-digit number, then
extend the learning to find the multiplication of a 4-digit number by a 2-digit number.
Example 1: Multiply 462 by 26. tth th H t O
Solution: Step 1: Write the multiplicand 462 4 6 2 Multiplicand
and multiplier 26 in proper × 2 6 Multiplier
place value columns. 2 7 7 2 462 × 6 ones
Step 2: Multiply 462 by 6 ones. + 9 2 4 0 462 × 2 tens
462 × 6 ones = 2772 ones 1 2 0 1 2 Product
Step 3: Multiply 462 by 2 tens.
462 × 2 tens = 9240 ones Challenge Question
Step 4: Add both partial products. Without performing the multiplication,
2772 + 9240 = 12012 determine if the product of 7289 × 9
Thus, 462 × 26 = 12,012. ends in an odd or even number.
Math Insight
The number that is multiplied is called the multiplicand. 12 × 6 = 72
The number by which we multiply is called the multiplier.
Multiplicand and multiplier are commonly called factors of the product. Multiplicand Product
The result of the multiplication is called the product. Multiplier
Multiplication of a 4-digit Number by a 2-digit Number
Example 2: Multiply 3231 by 12.
Solution: Step 1: Write the multiplicand 3231 tth th H t O
and the multiplier 12 in the 3 2 3 1
proper place value columns. × 1 2
