Objective: To reinforce the concept of the distributive property of multiplication
over addition.
Materials Required: Grid paper, some colourful bindis and a sticking tape.
Procedure:
Divide the class into pairs.
Tell the students to take grid paper.
Ask one student in each pair to put some red bindis to show 3 × 5 on the
grid paper.
Ask the partner to put some green bindis to show 3 × 4 on the grid paper.
Ask them to count the number of bindis put on the grid paper.
Student 1: 3 × 5 = 15 Student 2: 3 × 4 = 12
Total = 15 + 12 = 27
Now, ask them to join both grids using sticking tape as shown below and
observe the arrangement.
Count the total number of bindis.
3 × (5 + 4) = 3 × 9 = 27
Ask what they observe.
From the above presentation, we can see 3 × 5 + 3 × 4 = 3 × (5 + 4)
27 27
or 3 × (5 + 4) = 3 × 5 + 3 × 4
Repeat the above activity by taking different numbers of columns and rows
of the grid.
