digit 9 by 9. 2 2420 121 2 2420 1210
We have Q = 1 and 2 2
R = 0; put 1 in the tens 04 04
place of the quotient. 4 4

02
Step 5: Bring down the ones 2 2
digit. 00 00
Since the ones digit is
‘0’, put ‘0’ in the ones place of the quotient and R is also 0.
Thus, Q = 10010 and R = 0.
Checking: Divisor × Quotient + Remainder
= 9 × 10,010 + 0 = 90,090 + 0 = 90,090 = Dividend
So, the answer is correct.

1. Divide the following and check your answer.
(a) 5029 ÷ 2 (b) 3536 ÷ 6 (c) 6932 ÷ 7 (d) 4476 ÷ 8
(e) 37548 ÷ 4 (f) 22416 ÷ 5 (g) 10957 ÷ 6 (h) 80430 ÷ 8
2. Find the remainder for the following by using the formula:
Remainder = Dividend – Quotient × Divisor
[Hint: First multiply the quotient and divisor, then subtract the product from the
dividend.]
(a) Quotient = 809, Divisor = 6, Dividend = 4858
(b) Quotient = 568, Divisor = 5, Dividend = 2843
(c) Quotient = 914, Divisor = 9, Dividend = 8234
Division of 4- anD 5-Digit numbers by a 2-Digit number
Division by a 2-digit divisor can be done in the same way as division by a 1-digit
divisor. In this kind of division, multiplication tables help us.
Example 1: Divide 8976 by 15.
Solution: Step 1: Since 8 < 15, divide the first leading partial dividend 89 by 15.
Now, 15 × 5 = 75 and 15 × 6 = 90.
75 < 89 and 90 > 89
Thus, 15 goes into 89 five times.
Write 5 in the hundreds place of the quotient and 75 below 89.
