Objective: To reinforce the concept of multiplication of fractions.
Materials Required: Square grid paper and coloured pencils of two different colours.

                                                      3
                                               4
Procedure: Let us multiply and .
                                               5 7
Š Divide the class into pairs.
Š Give them a sheet of square grid paper and instruct to draw a rectangle

of size of 5 × 7 on it. Here, the rectangle has 5 rows and 7 columns.
                                  4
Š To represent on the rectangle, one student of each pair will colour
                                  5
4 rows in red as shown in the picture

                                  3
Š To represent on the same rectangle, the other student of the pair
                                  7
will colour 3 columns in blue.
Š Now, the pair will count the number of double-shaded squares and
the total number of squares in the rectangle.

Here, the number of double-shaded squares is 12 and the total
number of squares in the rectangle is 35.
Š The fraction for the double-shaded squares over the total
number of squares will be the required product. Here, the 4
                                                                                                5
                   fraction for double-shaded squares = 12 .
                                                               35
Š Repeat this activity with more pairs of fractions if time permits. 3
                                                                                                       7

Observe the given fraction square and complete the square.
