Let us take a square sheet of paper and divide it into 100 equal 1 = 0.01(one-hundredth)
parts. Shade one part. The one shaded part represents one- 100
1
hundredth 100 . It is represented in decimal form as 0.01.
This is read as zero point zero one.
Look at some more hundredths.
Total parts = 100, Shaded parts = 24 Total parts = 100, Shaded parts = 55
Fraction of shaded parts = 24 Fraction of shaded parts = 55
100 100
Decimal of shaded parts = 0.24 (zero point Decimal of shaded parts = 0.55 (zero point
two four) five five)
Similarly, 5 = 0.05, 22 = 0.22, 93 = 0.93, etc.

decimals greater than 1
Decimals which have 0 as the whole number part
are less than 1.
Now, look at the figures shown alongside. 1 4
10 tenths represent 1 and 4 tenths represent 0.4. 10 = 0.4
4 4
Combining 1 whole with 0.4 fractional part; 1 + 10 = 1 10 ,
we get 1.4, that is, 1 whole and 4 tenths.
This is read as one point four. 1.4 is greater than 1.
Decimals such as
1.05, 1.25, 2.37,
72.04 etc. are 37
.
greater than 1. = 2 100 = 237
