decimal Place valUe and exPanded form
We know that the decimal part of a decimal number is separated from the whole part by
a decimal point. The decimal part follows the same place value pattern as the whole part
of the number. However, the decimal place value works from left to right, just the reverse
manner of the whole number part.
1
The place value of the first place to the right of the units place is tenths 10 = 0.1
and the place value of the second place to the right of the units place is hundredths
1 = 0.01 .
100
Example: Write the place value and expanded form of the following numbers:
( a) 3.5 (b) 8.27
Solution:
( a) Ones • Tenths Get it right!
3 • 5 12.45 – Twelve point
Place Value forty-five
5 tenths 5 × 0.1 = 0.5 7
3 ones 3 × 1 = 3 12.45 – Twelve point
four five 3
Expanded form: 3.5 = 3 ones + 5 tenths = 3 + 0.5
