              METRIC MEASURES

              In the previous class, we have learnt that the metre,

              gram and litre are the standard units of length, Knowledge Desk
              weight and capacity, respectively. In science, mass is the amount of
                                                                                 ‘stuff’ in an object, while weight is

              We put different prefixes to the standard units of metric measures. The most commonly
              used prefixes are ‘kilo’, ‘hecto’ and ‘deca’ for higher units and ‘deci’, ‘centi’ and ‘milli’ for

              lower units.
              There is a relationship among the various units of metric measures. The table that follows

              shows the relationship between different units of measurement and can be understood
              using the place value chart.

                                                      The Story of the Metre
                    Where did the metre come from? After the French Revolution, scientists wanted a standard
                    unit of measurement for everyone. In the 1790s, they defined one metre as one ten-millionth
                    of the distance from the North Pole to the Equator. They even made a platinum-iridium bar
                    of this exact length to serve as the world’s official metre.
