Conversion of Smaller Units to Bigger Units

For converting smaller units into m/g/L
bigger units, divide by 10 for Kilo Hecto Deca Standard unit Deci Centi Milli
every step as we move backwards ÷ 10 ÷ 10 ÷ 10 ÷ 10 ÷ 10 ÷ 10
or to the left.
Conversion of Length

Example 4: Convert the following.

( a) 5432 m into km and m (b) 1235 m into km and m
Solution: ( a) 5432 m into km and m km hm dam m
5432 m = 5000 m + 432 m

= (5000 ÷ 1000) km + 432 m ÷ 10 ÷ 10 ÷ 10
= 5 km 432 m
( b) 1235 m into km
1235 m = 1000 m + 235 m km hm dam m

= (1000 ÷ 1000) km + 235 m ÷ 10 ÷ 10 ÷ 10
= 1 km 235 m
Conversion of Weight

Example 5: Convert the following.

( a) 2323 mg into g and mg (b) 5223 g into kg and g

Solution: ( a) 2323 mg into g and mg g dg cg mg
2323 mg = 2000 mg + 323 mg
= (2000 ÷ 1000) g + 323 mg ÷ 10 ÷ 10 ÷ 10
= 2 g 323 mg

( b) 5223 g into kg and g kg hg dag g
5223 g = 5000 g + 223 g ÷ 10 ÷ 10 ÷ 10
= (5000 ÷ 1000) kg + 223 g = 5 kg 223 g
