                2. During a visit to Sikkim, Mr. Rohan spent `5800 on a hotel stay, `3200 on transport
and `2850 on food. What was the total amount spent by Mr. Rohan on the trip, if the
hotel manager gave him a discount of `400 on the hotel stay?

The Story of Our Rupee Symbol (₹)
The Indian Rupee symbol (₹) is very new. It was designed in 2010 by Professor Udaya Kumar. It’s
a blend of the Devanagari letter ‘ ’ (Ra) and the Roman letter ‘R’. The parallel lines at the top
symbolise the Indian flag and represent equality.

              Unitary method

Swastik wants to buy a pack of pencils. Brand A offers a pack
of 10 pencils for `45 and brand B offers a pack of 8 pencils for
`40. Which pack should Swastik buy to get a better deal, if

the quality offered by both brands is the same? Brand A Brand B
To decide which is the better deal, we need to find the price of one pencil of each pack.
The method of finding the value of one article, when the If the unit price is known,
value of some articles is given, is called the unitary method. we can find the price of many
                                                                                        items of the same kind.
If the price of one article (item) is given, then the price of
more articles (items) can be found by multiplying the price of one article and the number
of articles. Thus, to get more we multiply.

Example 1: The cost of 1 notebook is `30. How much will 6 notebooks cost?
              Solution: Cost of 1 notebook = `30

                            Therefore, the cost of 6 notebooks = (30 × 6) = `180.

                  Cost of 1 notebook = `30 Cost of 6 notebooks = (6 × `30) = `180
If the price of any number of articles is given, the price of one article can be found by
dividing the total price of the articles by the number of articles. Thus, to get less we divide.

Example 2: If the cost of 12 pencils is `84, find the cost of 1 pencil.
              Solution: Cost of 12 pencils = `84
84 Finding the cost of 1 article
                            ∴ Cost of 1 pencil = (84 ÷ 12) = ` = `7 (item) of a kind is called
                                                                     12 finding the unit price.
Therefore, the cost of 1 pencil will be `7.
