              rounDing oFF numbers

In the previous class, we learnt how to round off numbers to the nearest 10 and 100.

Let us recall and extend this learning. While rounding off, we use the nearest multiple of
              10, 100 or 1000.

rounding off to the nearest 10

To round off a number to the nearest 10, follow these steps.

Step 1: Look at the digit in the ones place of the given number.

Step 2: If the digit is less than 5, replace the digit with 0 and keep the other digits as they are.
Step 3: If the digit is 5 or more, add 1 to the digit in the tens place and replace the digit

in the ones place with 0, keeping the other digits as they are.
              Examples: (a) 49132 rounded off to the nearest 10 = 49130 (as the ones digit 2 < 5)

                            ( b) 54357 rounded off to the nearest 10 = 54360 (as the ones digit 7 > 5)
                            ( c) 703475 rounded off to the nearest 10 = 703480 (as the ones digit 5 = 5)

rounding off to the nearest 100

To round off a number to the nearest 100, follow these steps.

Step 1: Look at the digit in the tens place of the given number.

Step 2: If the digit is less than 5, replace the tens and ones digits with 0 and keep the
                       other digits as they are.

Step 3: If the digit in the tens place is 5 or more, add 1 to the digit in the hundreds place
and replace the digits in the tens and ones places with 0, keeping the other digits
                       as they are.

              Examples: (a) 41729 rounded off to the nearest 100 = 41700 (as the tens digit 2 < 5)
                            (b) 35587 rounded off to the nearest 100 = 35600 (as the tens digit 8 > 5)
