Use a scale to measure the distance between the India Gate and the Red Fort shown
below.
Scale: 1 cm = 750 m
In the above picture, the distance between the India Gate and the Red Fort is 8 cm.
The scale is 1 cm = 750 m. So, the actual distance between the India Gate and the Red
Fort is 8 × 750 m = 6000 m = 6 km.

directions
A symbol like a compass is used to show the directions on a map. Look at N
the given compass.
We can see that the upper part shows ‘N’, which means the ‘North direction’, W E
the lower part shows ‘S’ meaning the ‘South direction’, the left part indicates
‘W’, which means the ‘West direction’ and the right part shows ‘E’, which S
means the ‘East direction’.
North, South, East and West are the primary directions. North (N)
Now study the diagram shown alongside. North-West North-East
(NW) (NE)
The direction between north and east is called the
north-east (NE) direction. West (W) East (E)
The direction between north and west is called the South-West
north-west (NW) direction. (SW) South-East
The direction between south and west is called the South (S) (SE)
south-west (SW) direction.
The direction between south and east is called the south-east (SE) direction.
