Observe it carefully, each vertical line (column) and horizontal line (row) is marked with a
number.
To reach the panda, we will start from zero.
Move one step horizontally towards east and reach the first column.
Move one step vertically towards north and reach the first row. The panda is where the first
row and the first column meet. We write the meeting point of the first row and the first
column as (1, 1). It is called an ordered pair. In an ordered pair, the first number shows
the horizontal position and the second number shows the vertical position of objects.
Example 1: Locate the animal at the following positions on the map.
( a) (2, 7) (b) (7, 4) (c) (11, 11) (d) (4, 10)
( e) (10, 1) ( f ) (10, 9)
Solution:
(a) (2, 7) — Tiger (b) (7, 4) — Elephant
( c) (11, 11) — Hornbill (d) (4, 10) — Rhinoceros
( e) (10, 1) — Monkey ( f ) (10, 9) — Zebra
Example 2: Write the position of the following animals on the map.
( a) Lion (b) Tortoise (c) Deer (d) Crocodile
Solution:
(a) Lion (3, 3) (b) Tortoise (4, 1) (c) Deer (8, 7) (d) Crocodile (6, 8)
