rounding off to the nearest 1000

To round off a number to the nearest 1000, follow these steps.
Step 1: Look at the digit in the hundreds place of the given number.

Step 2: If the digit is less than 5, replace the digits in the hundreds, tens and ones places
with 0 and keep the other digits as they are.

Step 3: If the digit is 5 or more, add 1 to the digit in the thousands place, replace each
digit on its right with 0 and keep the other digits as they are.
              Examples:

                    ( a) 28375 rounded off to the nearest thousand = 28000 (as the hundreds digit 3 < 5)

                    ( b) 20684 rounded off to the nearest thousand = 21000 (as the hundreds digit 6 > 5)

                    ( c) 32540 rounded off to the nearest thousand = 33000 (as the hundreds digit 5 = 5)

Example 1: Round off each of the following numbers to the nearest 10.
                            ( a) 584658 (b) 3268574
Solution: (a) In 584658, the digit in the ones place is 8, which is greater than 5.

So, we increase the digit in the tens place by 1 and replace the digit in
                                 the ones place with 0.

Thus, 584658 becomes 584660 after rounding off to the nearest 10.
( b) In 3268574, the digit in the ones place is 4, which is less than 5.
So, we replace the digit in the ones place with 0.

Thus, 3268574 becomes 3268570 after rounding off to the nearest 10.
Example 2: Round off each of the following numbers to the nearest 100.

                            ( a) 2849358 (b) 42674937
Solution: ( a) In 2849358, the digit in the tens place is 5.

So, we increase the digit in the hundreds place by 1 and replace the tens and
                                 ones digits with 0.
Thus, 2849358 becomes 2849400 after rounding off to the nearest 100.

( b) In 42674937, the digit in the tens place is 3, which is less than 5.
So, we replace the digits in the tens and ones places with 0.

Thus, 42674937 becomes 42674900 after rounding off to the nearest 100.
Example 3: Round off 34856735 to the nearest:

                            ( a) 100 (b) 1000
Solution: ( a) In 34856735, the digit in the tens place is 3, which is less than 5.
Thus, 34856735 becomes 34856700 after rounding off to the nearest 100.

( b) In 34856735, the digit in the hundreds place is 7, which is greater than 5.
Thus, 34856735 becomes 34857000 after rounding off to the nearest 1000.
