A circle graph or pie chart is another way to represent data
graphically. Circle graphs show different parts or categories of
the data set together in the form of a whole. Football Cricket
In a circle graph (pie chart), a circle is divided into sectors
(slices). Each sector represents a different data category as a
fraction or percentage of the complete circle. The size of each Badminton
sector shows what part of the whole it is. Hockey Basketball

Look at the given pie chart or pie graph. It shows the favourite
              sports of various students.
Š The biggest portion of the circle shows that the most students like cricket.

Š Football is in second place among the favourite sports of students.
Š Hockey is liked by fewer students and badminton is liked by the least number of
                  students.

The pie chart was invented by Florence Nightingale, a famous nurse, in 1858. She used her
“rose diagrams”, an early form of the pie chart, to show that more soldiers were dying from
poor sanitation in hospitals than from battle wounds. Her powerful data visualisation convinced
the British government to improve hospital conditions, saving many lives.

Example 1: The circle graph shows how Lina spends her monthly pocket money. If Lina
gets `300 every month, what fraction of the money does she spend on snacks, on travel
              and on stationery?
Solution: Fraction of amount spent on snacks Travel

                               = Amount of money spent on snacks = 150 = 1 `50
Total pocket money 300 2 Stationery
                                          1 Snacks `25
She spends of her pocket money on snacks. `150
                                          2 Saving
Fraction of amount spent on travel `75
Amount of money spent on travel 50 1
                               = = =
                                           Total pocket money 300 6
                                          1
She spends of her pocket money on travel.
                                          6
Fraction of amount spent on stationery
Amount of money spent on stationery 25 1
                               = = =
                                            Total pocket money 300 12
                                           1
She spends of her pocket money on stationery.
                                           12
