              Rule 3: A  smaller  Roman  numeral  on  the  left  side  of  a  larger  Roman  numeral  is  always
                       subtracted from the larger Roman numeral.

              Examples:  (a)  IX  = 10 – 1 = 9                       (b)  XL  = 50 – 10 = 40
                            (  c)  CD  = 500 – 100 = 400             (d)  CM  = 1000 – 100 = 900
