diviSion of nuMbErS
division by 10, 100 and 1000
When a number is divided by 10, the ones digit of the dividend becomes the remainder
and the number formed by the rest of the digits becomes the quotient.
examples: (a) 56,738 ÷ 10, Q = 5673, R = 8
( b) 2,70,364 ÷ 10, Q = 27,036, R = 4
When a number is divided by 100, the number formed by the tens and ones digits of
the dividend becomes the remainder and the number formed by the rest of the digits
becomes the quotient.
examples: (a) 41,036 ÷ 100, Q = 410, R = 36
( b) 5,21,483 ÷ 100, Q = 5214, R = 83
When a number is divided by 1000, the number formed by the hundreds, tens and
ones digits of the dividend becomes the remainder and the number formed by the rest
of the digits becomes the quotient.
examples: (a) 69,273 ÷ 1000, Q = 69, R = 273
( b) 5,00,436 ÷ 1000, Q = 500, R = 436
