objective: To find the factors of a given number. Let us find the factors of 36.
Materials required: Cardboard sheets, sketch pen, scissors, geometry box, and glue
Procedure: Make groups of four students. Give each group a cardboard, scissors, and
other materials. Instruct them to:
Draw a 10 × 10 grid of 100 squares on the cardboard sheet.
Cut the square pieces using the scissors.
Take as many square pieces as the number that is to be factorised. Here, the number
to be factorised is 36.
Make all possible rectangular arrangements of these pieces.
Possibility-1: Arrangement of 36 pieces in 1 row.
36
1
Thus, 1 and 36 are factors of 36.
Possibility-2: Arrangement of 36 pieces in 2 equal rows.
18
2
Thus, 2 and 18 are factors of 36.
Possibility-3: Arrangement of 36 pieces in 3 equal rows.
12
3
Thus, 3 and 12 are factors of 36.
Possibility-4: Arrangement of 36 pieces Possibility-5: Arrangement of 36
in 4 equal rows. pieces in 6 equal rows.
9 6
4
6
Thus, 4 and 9 are factors of 36.
Thus, 6 is a factor of 36.
The number of rows and columns so obtained in each arrangement will be the factors
of the given number.
Thus, the factors of 36 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 12, 18 and 36.
The groups that find the correct factors get one point.
Repeat the activity with other numbers.
