comparing Fractions visually
Take paper plates and divide them into various
fractional parts (e.g., one into halves, another into
quarters, another into eighths).
Now, compare the parts of different fractions by placing cutouts over one another.
Note which is larger or smaller.
comparing like Fractions
We know that like fractions are fractions with the same denominator.
If the fractions are like fractions, then the fraction with the greater numerator is greater.
Example 1: Compare the following:
5
3
4
7
(a) and (b) and (c) 7 and 5
5 5 8 8 10 10
Solution: Look at the given pairs of fractions and compare them by observing the diagrams.
7
5
3
4
(a) and (b) and (c) 7 and 5
5 5 8 8 10 10
4 > 3 5 < 7 7 > 5
5 5 8 8 10 10
