meASUring lengTH

Using body parts

Long ago people used their body parts such as fingers, handspans, cubits, feet, etc.

to measure lengths of objects.

handspan palm finger/digit cubit

pace footspan armspan

Inaya and Ishan are placing their handspans

along the stick to measure its length.

Inaya: Length of the stick is 5 handspans.

Ishan: Length of the stick is 7 handspans.

Think! Why are they measuring different

number of handspans?

same length object.

Using Small objects

Look at the following. Here, the length of a pencil is thus, the length of the
pencil is equal to the
measured using erasers. length of 10 erasers.

The pencil is 10 erasers long.
