Patterns
Patterns are all around us. We look at patterns in our house. We can find some
beautiful patterns in windows, floors and walls.
We can make patterns using 2 or more different things. We can make patterns by
using our hands and feet also.
Observe the patterns in sequence of letters.
P Q R P Q R P Q R P Q R
The letters P, Q and R are repeated in the same order again and again. The above
sequence forms a pattern.
Let us see another sequence of figures.
Here, you can observe that a triangle comes first, then a square; again a triangle,
then a square; and so on. This again forms a pattern.
Now look at the sequence of numbers.
2 4 6 8 10 12 14 ____
Here, each number is increasing by 2. So, the missing number will be 14 + 2 = 16.
More examples of number patterns are:
Odd numbers pattern: 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, ...
Repeating pattern: 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 2, 3, 1, 2, 2, 3, ...
Teacher’s Encourage the students to collect pebbles, flowers, leaves, glasses, bowls, sticks, bangles, coins, caps, etc. and
Tip arrange them in a pattern. Discuss the rules they apply for making the patterns.
