                                   Learning by Doing





              Objective: To reinforce the concept of subtraction in a play way

              method.

              Materials Required: Empty shoe box, paint colour, brush, paper
              cutter, some tennis balls, number cards and a toy hammer.

              Preparation:

                     Š Take an empty shoe box with a lid.

                     Š Cut out 10 circles in the lid as shown in the image.
                      Make sure that the size of the circle is slightly

                      smaller than the circumference of the tennis balls.

                     Š Prepare some cards with subtraction problems
                      within 10.

                     Š Paint the shoe box in bright colours to make it look attractive.

                     Š Jumble the cards and place upside down on a table.
              Procedure:                              Whack a Ball


                     Š Invite the students in small groups for the activity.
                     Š A student will pick a card and solve it. For example, if the card says 8  – 3, the

                      student will count and place 8 balls in the 8 circular slots.

                     Š To subtract 3, the student will whack three balls with a toy hammer so that
                      the balls that are hit, drop into the  box.

                     Š To find the answer of 8  – 3, the student will count the number of remaining

                      balls, that is 5.

                     Š Similarly, other students follow the steps by choosing other cards.

                     Š Continue the activity till time permits.
