subtrACtion in tens

Example 1: Subtract 20 from 30.

Solution: When we subtract 2 tens from 3 tens, we are left with 1 ten as shown below.

3 tens – 2 tens = 1 ten

Thus, 30 – 20 = 10.

Example 2: Find 40 – 10.

Solution: When we take away 1 ten from 4 tens, we are left with 3 tens.

4 tens – 1 ten = 3 tens

Thus, 40 – 10 = 30.
