              Patterns

A sequence of figures, shapes, letters or numbers that repeats itself is called a
pattern. We can see patterns all around us. Look at the patterns given below.

                   A pattern in a A pattern in a A pattern in a A pattern on a

                     pineapple sunflower window design tiger

              Pattern in shapes

Look at the following arrangement of shapes. The arrangement follows a pattern.

In this pattern, a cube comes first, then a sphere, then a cylinder; again a cube, then
a sphere, then a cylinder, and so on. Here, we find a unit of three different shapes

is being repeated. So, it is a type of ABC pattern.

Now, observe the pattern given below.

Here, you can see that one triangle is added to the next step. It is an example of
              increasing pattern.

Let us see one more pattern as given below.

In this pattern, vertical and horizontal arrows come alternately by changing its
directions and one arrow is added in each step. This is an example of analogical
              pattern.

tip Discuss various art forms like Madhubani or Mithila painting, Kalamkari, Warli or any other local art forms
that the students are familiar with. Visualise different patterns made of shapes, lines and images in that art
form. You may also invite your drawing teacher or any local artist for this activity.
