If all other digits except ones are the same, then compare the ones digits. The number
with a greater digit at the ones place is greater.

              example 5: Compare: (a) 9,115 and 9,118 (b) 3,229 and 3,224

              Solution: th H t O th H t O

                                9 1 1 5 3 2 2 9
                                9 1 1 8 3 2 2 4

                                 Same 5 < 8 Same 9 > 4
                             So, 9,115 < 9,118 So, 3,229 > 3,224

              greatest aND smallest Numbers

Let us find the greatest number among 7,839; 999 and 5,326. th H t O
Step 1: Arrange the numbers in the place value chart. 7 8 3 9
                                                                                                                    9
                                                                                                               9
                                                                                                           9
              Step 2: Cross the smallest number (999) from the group. 5 3 2 6
                                                 7,839 999 5,326
Step 3: Out of the remaining two numbers, compare which is the greater number. In this

case, 7,839 is greater than 5,326.
Step 4: Thus, 7839 is the greatest number among 7,839; 999 and 5,326.

example 1: Find the greatest number among 4,562; 1,234 and 2,076.

Solution: Step 1: Arrange the numbers in the place value chart. th H t O
                           Step 2: Cross the smallest number (1,234) from the group. 4 5 6 2

                                      4,562 1,234 2,076 1 2 3 4

Step 3: Out of the remaining two numbers, compare which 2 0 7 6
is the greater number. In this case, 4,562 is greater than 2,076.

Step 4: Thus, 4,562 is the greatest number among 4,562; 1,234 and 2,076.

example 2: Find the smallest number among 4,215; 6,738 and 9,831.
Solution: Step 1: Arrange the numbers in the place value chart.

Step 2: Cross the greatest number (9831) from the group. th H t O
                                                                                                      4 2 1 5
                                       4,215 6,738 9,831 6 7 3 8
Step 3: Out of the remaining two numbers, compare which 9 8 3 1

is the greater number. In this case, 6,738 is greater than 4,215 or you
may say 4,215 is smaller than 6,738.

Step 4: Thus, 4,215 is the smallest number among 4,215; 6,738 and 9,831.
