Learning by Doing

Objective: To make a sand clock.

Materials required: Two plastic-bottles, sand, aluminium foil, a marker,
stands

Procedure:

Š Get into pairs.

Š Take a plastic bottle and fill it with dry and fine sand.

Š Cover its mouth with aluminium foil.
Š Make a very small hole in the foil.

Š Now, place the bottle filled with sand on the other bottle in the

inverted position, as shown in the figure.

Š Note and mark the sand levels at suitable interval, say 5 minutes.
Š Record the time when the inverted bottle becomes empty.
