We arrange the numbers in increasing order, that is, from the th H t O
smallest to the greatest; it is called ascending order. Ritvik noted 2 9 3 7
down the numbers from the number plates of four cars. 6 5 4 3 Greatest
1 3 5 9
Smallest
The numbers are 2,937, 6,543, 1,359 and 5,023. 5 0 2 3
He wants to arrange the numbers in a particular order.
First, he writes the given numbers in the place value chart and then starts comparing.
Looking at the thousands place digits, 2, 6, 1 and 5; he finds that 1 < 2 < 5 < 6.
Thus, the four numbers in ascending order will be arranged as:
1,359 < 2,937 < 5,023 < 6,543
Also, when we arrange the numbers in decreasing order, that is, from the greatest to the
smallest, it is called the descending order.
So, the descending order of the numbers is: 6,543 > 5,023 > 2,937 > 1,359.
example: The depths of the Atlantic Ocean is 3,646 m; the Pacific Ocean is 4,280 m; the
Arctic Ocean is 1,204 m; the Indian Ocean is 3,741 m. Arrange these depths of Oceans
in descending order.
Solution: Looking at the thousands place digits, 3, 4, 1 and 3; we find that 4 > 3 = 3 > 1.
That means, 4,280 is the greatest and 1,204 is the smallest. Now, comparing
the hundreds digits of the other two numbers, we th H t O
find 7 > 6. So, 3,741 > 3,646. 3 6 4 6
4 2 8 0 Greatest
Thus, the four numbers in descending order will 1 2 0 4 Smallest
be arranged as: 4,280 > 3,741 > 3,646 > 1,204 3 7 4 1
Knowledge Desk
Most of the Earth's surface is covered by the oceans. The major four oceans are
the Atlantic, Pacific, Arctic and Indian Oceans.
