FormiNg the greatest aND smallest Numbers

              Without repetition of digits

To form the greatest number with the given digits, we arrange the th H t O
              digits in descending order. 9 8 2 1
For example, the greatest 4-digit number using digits 1, 9, 8, 2 is 9821. Digits are in
                                                                                                     descending order.

To form the smallest number with the given digits, we arrange the th H t O
              digits in ascending order. 1 2 8 9

For example, the smallest 4-digit number using the digits 1, 9, 8, 2 Digits are in
              is 1289. ascending order

example 1: Form the greatest 4-digit number using the given digits:

                   (a) 5, 3, 7, 2 (b) 4, 9, 8, 9

Solution: To form the greatest 4-digit number, we arrange the digits in descending order.

                             (a) The greatest 4-digit number using digits 5, 3, 7, 2 is 7,532.

                             (b) The greatest 4-digit number using digits 4, 9, 8, 9 is 9,984.

example 2: Form the smallest 4-digit number using the given digits.

                   (a) 5, 3, 7, 2 (b) 4, 3, 7, 6

Solution: To form the smallest 4-digit number, we arrange the given digits in ascending order.

                             (a) The smallest 4-digit number using digits 5, 3, 7, 2 is 2,357.

                             (b) The smallest 4-digit number using digits 4, 3, 7, 6 is 3,467.
