              Division as Equal Distribution

Ritik has 12 gulab jamuns. He wants to share these gulab jamuns equally

among his 4 brothers. He starts by giving one gulab jamun to each of
his brothers. He repeats this step till no gulab jamuns is left.

               Step 1: Step 2:

               Step 3:

No gulab jamuns is left after the third step. Each brother of Ritik has 3 gulab jamuns.
So, when 12 gulab jamuns are distributed among his 4 brothers, each brother gets

              3 gulab jamuns.

It means Ritik divided 12 gulab jamuns into 4 groups of 3.

              This can be represented as:
                            12 ÷ 4 = 3
                            ↑ ↑ ↑
Number of gulab jamuns Number of brothers Number of gulab jamuns each brother gets

Division means equal sharing. It also means making equal groups.

example 1: Neetu has 21 flowers. She wants to put them into 7 vases. How many flowers

will Neetu have to put in each vase?
              Solution:

                                      21 ÷ 7 = 3
                                      ↑ ↑ ↑
Number of flowers Number of vases Number of flowers in each vase

Thus, Neetu will have to put 3 f lowers in each vase.

example 2: There are 30 balls. How many packets can be made if each packet contains

              6 balls?

              Solution: 30 ÷ 6 = 5
Thus, 5 packets of 6 balls each

can be made with 30 balls.
