Example 1: Convert into a mixed fraction.
                                        2
Solution: Divide numerator 5 by the denominator 2.
                             5   = 5 ÷ 2

                             2 2 5 2 Whole part
                                                                                               4
                                     5 1 Denominator Numerator
                             Thus, = 2 1
                                     2 2 (new)

Converting Mixed Fractions into Improper Fractions

A mixed fraction can be converted into an improper fraction.

To convert a mixed fraction into an improper fraction, we multiply the whole number

by the denominator of the fraction and add the numerator to the product obtained.

The sum placed over the denominator gives the improper fraction.

                                          Denominator × Whole + Numerator
Mixed fraction = Denominator = Improper fraction

                                          1
Example 2: Convert 3 into an improper fraction.
                                          2
                                       +

                                                  ×+
                                                                +
              Solution: 3 1 = 3 1 = 32 1 = 61 = 7
                                2 2 2 2 2
