5. Convert the following mixed fractions into improper fractions.
1 1 2 1 1 1
(a) 8 (b) 7 (c) 10 (d) 4 (e) 5 (f) 9
2 3 3 4 5 7
Like and UnLike Fractions
Like Fractions
Look at the given figures.
1 2 3 4 5
6 6 6 6 6
Each of these figures has been divided into 6 equal parts but shaded differently. The
denominators of the fractions representing the shaded parts are same.
That is 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 . These are called like fractions.
6 6 6 6 6
Thus, the two or more fractions having the same denominator are called like fractions.
Some more examples of like fractions are 1 , 2 , 3 and 4 ; 7 , 3 and 9 .
5 5 5 5 11 11 11
Unlike Fractions
Look at the given figures.
2 3 4 3
4 8 6 10
These figures are divided into different number of parts and shaded differently. The
denominators of the fractions representing the shaded parts are different,
That is 2 , 3 , 4 , 3 . These are called unlike fractions.
4 8 6 10
Thus, the two or more fractions which do not have the same denominator are called
unlike fractions.
Quick Check
Encircle the odd one out. Remember
,
1. 2 , 3 , 7 , 8 2. 1 , 5 , 11 13 Same denominator Like fractions
