comParing and ordering Fractions
comparing like Fractions
To compare like fractions, we observe their numerators. The fraction with the greater
numerator is greater.
4 3
example 1: Compare and .
5 5
4 3 4 3
Solution: Both and are like fractions.
5 5 5 5
We can see that the shaded part in the first Note
figure is bigger than that of the second figure. When denominators
are same, we compare
4 3 only the numerators.
So, > [Since, 4 > 3]
5 5
comparing Unlike Fractions with same numerator
We can compare unlike fractions having the same numerator.
example 2: Compare 3 and 3 .
6 4 3 3
Solution: Let us see the fractions using figures. 6 4
Looking at the shaded parts, we find that
3 < 3 Note
6 4 (But 6 > 4) In unlike fractions with the same
numerator, the fraction with greater
ordering Fractions denominator will be smaller.
1 3 5 4 2
example 3: Arrange the fractions , , , and in ascending order.
6 6 6 6 6
Solution:
1 2 3 4 5
6 6 6 6 6
Since, 1 < 2 < 3 < 4 < 5,
Think and Answer
