Converting Unlike Decimals to Like Decimals

To convert unlike decimals to like decimals, follow the following steps:

Step 1: Identify the decimal number having the largest number of decimal places.

Step 2: Add zeros at the extreme right of the decimal part of each remaining decimal

number to make the equal number of digits in the decimal part.

              Example 2: Convert the decimals 0.246, 46.8, 5.96, 3.042 into like decimals.
Solution: Clearly, 3.042 has 3 decimal places which is largest. So, every decimal number

must have 3 decimal places. So, add zeros at the right side of the decimal part
                            of each decimal.
                                                                                                       Note

                    (c) 116.31, 86.3, 70.09, 78.05 (d) 0.56, 0.605, 12.1, 270.01

                3. Identify, which are like decimals in the following:

                    (a) 7.1, 0.97, 31.4, 39.074, 8.89, 10.1 (b) 24.0, 99.09, 21.470, 3.001, 0.098, 0.1,10
                4. Write two equivalent decimals for each.

                    (a) 0.3 = _______ = _______ (b) 2.5 = _______ = _______

                    (c) 41.7 = _______ = _______ (d) 6.40 = _______ = _______

                    (e) 9.700 = _______ = _______ (f) 5.300 = _______ = _______

                5. Convert the following unlike decimals into like decimals.

                    (a) 2.3, 6.87, 2.63, 43.6, 1.264 (b) 5.1, 5.01, 5.001, 40.4, 48.26, 100.143

Teacher’s Explain to the children, with the help of examples, that the expanded form of any decimal number can also be
Tip expressed as a sum of whole numbers and decimal numbers as per their place values, like

                           32.759 = 30 + 2 + 0.7 + 0.05 + 0.009.
