ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION OF INTEGERS

Addition of Integers

To add integers, follow the following rules.

Rule 1: If two positive (+ve) or two (–ve) integers are added, then Note

Subtraction of Integers

Subtraction is the reverse process of addition.

Let us subtract (–4) from 7. As, 7 – (–4) = 7 + (+4) = 11
Clearly, we change the sign of the integer (–4) to be
subtracted and then add. Let us take another example and Think and Answer
subtract 5 from (–7). Write 5 integers whose
sum is 9.
(–7) – 5 = (–7) + (–5) = – (7 + 5) (By rule 2)
