                3. State whether the following statements given below are true or false:
                    (a) The smallest integer is 0. (b) The opposite of –15 is 15.

                    (c) The opposite of zero is zero.
                    (d) Every positive counting number is bigger than 0.

                    (e) 0 is greater than every negative number.

                4. Draw a number line and answer the questions given below.:
                    (a) Which number will we reach if we start from –5 and move 9 steps to the right?

                    (b) Which number will we reach if we start from –7 and move 6 steps to the left?
                    (c) Which number will we reach if we start from –8 and move 5 steps to the right?

                5. Write the opposite of each of the following:
                    (a) Rise in temperature (b) Withdrawl of `5000 from a bank

                    (c) Saving `500 per day (d) At a depth of 10 m

                    (e) A credit of `2500 (f) depth of 150 m from sea level
                    (g) move 5 steps upstairs

                6. Write the following integers in ascending and descending orders.
                    (a) 12, –14, –8, –6, –3, 0, –12, 11 (b) 9, –15, –18, –6, –7, 0, –12, 11, 10

              ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION OF INTEGERS

              Addition of Integers

To add integers, follow the following rules.

Rule 1: If two positive (+ve) or two (–ve) integers are added, then Note
add their values regardless of their signs and put the The sum of two positive
common sign. integers is positive and
                       Examples: (a) 9 + 2 = 11 (b) –7 – 6 = – (7 + 6) = –13 sum of two negative
                                                                                             integers is negative.
Rule 2: For addition of a +ve and a –ve integer, find the difference
between their values and put the sign of greater number.

                       Examples: (a) (–7) + 15 = (15 – 7) = 8 (b) (–18) + 11 = – (18 – 11) = –7
              Subtraction of Integers

Subtraction is the reverse process of addition.

              Let us subtract (–4) from 7. As, 7 – (–4) = 7 + (+4) = 11
Clearly, we change the sign of the integer (–4) to be
subtracted and then add. Let us take another example and Think and Answer
subtract 5 from (–7). Write 5 integers whose
                                                                                           sum is 9.
              (–7) – 5 = (–7) + (–5) = – (7 + 5) (By rule 2)
                                           = –12
