Area of the square 36
Area of each triangle = = sq. cm = 18 sq. cm.
2 2
Is this also true for a rectangle? Let us see.
Here, a rectangle whose length is 8 cm and breadth is 6 cm is given.
8 cm 6 cm
Area of the rectangle = 8 cm × 6 cm = 48 sq. cm
Again, the diagonal divides the rectangle in two equal halves and each half is a triangle.
So, area of each triangle = 48 ÷ 2 sq. cm = 24 sq. cm
Now, let us find the area of triangles shown below.
(a) (b)
Step 1: Draw a rectangle around the triangles as shown.
(a) (b)
Step 2: Divide the triangles into two parts as shown.
(a) (b)
Step 3: Shade the rectangles with different colours and find the area of them separately.
