= = 80 × = 80%
100 100 Remember
(c) 7 = 7 × 100 % = (7 × 5)% = 35% We can also write the
20 20 equivalent fractions
Alternative method: 7 = 7 × 5 with denominator 100
and then convert it into
20 20 × 5
35 percentage.
= = 35% While converting a
100 number and a quantity in

CONVERTING PERCENTAGE INTO FRACTIONS
It is converse of converting fractions into percentage.
To convert a percentage into a fraction, we remove % symbol and divide by 100.
Example: Convert the following percentages into fractions.
3
(a) 9% (b) 15% (c) 35% (d) %
5
Solution: (a) 9% = 9 (b) 15% = 15 = 3
100 100 20 Get it right!
3
(c) 35% = 35 = 7 (d) % = 3 = 3 35% = 35 × 100
100 20 5 5 × 100 500 35% = 35

100 100 Remember
(c) 48% = 48 = 0.48 (d) 78% = 78 = 0.78 To convert per cent into
100 100 decimal, remove % sign and
(e) 2 % = 2 = 2 = 2 × 2 = 4 = 0.004 shift the decimal point two
places to the left.
5 5 × 100 500 500 × 2 1000
