Rule 3: A smaller Roman numeral on the left side of a greater Roman numeral is always
subtracted from the greater Roman numeral.

              Examples: (a) IX = 10 – 1 = 9 (b) XL = 50 – 10 = 40
                            (c) CD = 500 – 100 = 400 (d) CM = 1000 – 100 = 900

                      Knowledge Desk

In Roman numerals, the number 4 is spelt as IV but many clocks around the
world still use the old method to represent it, that is, the number IIII
                     instead of the number IV.
One of the most important clocks showing this is the clock tower Palace of
                     Westminster.
