              Example 3: Divide the following and check your answer.
                    (a)  26736 ÷ 125                                 (b)  303683 ÷ 260

              Solution:                2 1 3     Q      Step 1:  Divide  267  by 125.  125  × 2  = 250  is  the
                    (a)     125   2 6 7 3 6                      maximum  possible  product  obtained  < 267.
                               –  2 5 0                          Subtract 250 from 267 and bring down 3.

                                    1 7 3               Step 2:  173 is the new dividend. Here, 125 × 1 = 125 is
                                  –  1 2 5                       the maximum possible product obtained < 173.
                                       4 8 6                     Subtract 125 from 173 and bring down 6.
                                    –  3 7 5            Step 3:  Now, 486 is the new partial dividend. Here, 125 ×

                                       1 1 1      R              3 = 375 is the maximum possible product < 486.
                                                                 Subtract 375 from 486.
                                                        Step 4: 111 is left which is less than 125 and nothing

                                                                 is left to bring down.
                            Checking:                   Thus, Quotient = 213 and Remainder = 111

                            Quotient × Divisor + Remainder = Dividend
                            213 × 125 + 111 = 26736
                                 26625 + 111 = 26736
                                         26736 = 26736. The division is correct.

                    (b)                1 1 6 8      Q   Step 1: Divide 303 by 260.
                            260   3 0 3 6 8 3                      260 × 1 = 260 is the maximum possible product
                               –  2 6 0
                                                                 obtained < 303.
                                    4 3 6                        Subtract 260 from 303 and bring down 6.
                                  –  2 6 0
                                     1 7 6 8            Step 2:  436 is the new dividend. Here, 260 × 1 = 260 is
                                  –  1 5 6 0                     the maximum possible product obtained < 436.

                                       2 0 8 3                   Subtract 260 from 436 and bring down 8.
                                    –  2 0 8 0          Step 3:  1768 is the new dividend. Here, 260 × 6 = 1560
                                              3     R
                                                                 is the maximum possible product obtained
                            Checking:                            < 1768.  Subtract  1560  from 1768  and  bring
                            Quotient × Divisor +                 down 3.
                            Remainder = Dividend Step 4: Now, 2083 is the new partial dividend. Here,

                            1168 × 260 + 3                       260 × 8 = 2080 is the  maximum possible
                            = 303683                             product < 2083. Subtract 2080 from 2083.
                            303680 + 3 = 303683         Step 5:  3 is left which is less than 260 and nothing is

                            303683 = 303683                      left to bring down.
                            Hence, the division is
                            correct.                    Thus, Quotient = 1168 and Remainder = 3
