Learning by Doing
Objective: To strengthen the concept of mixed operations in a play way.
Materials Required: Worksheet on which 5 or 6 different numbers
(including 2-digit numbers) are written and it has to make a certain
number.
For example, Can you obtain 54 as result using numbers 5, 4, 6, 9,
8, 2 and basic operations (+, –, × or ÷)?
Teacher should prepare sufficient worksheets as per the number of
students in the class.
Procedure:
Involve the class in a mixed operations Math Game.
Divide the class into groups of 3-4 students. And provide a worksheet to each group.
Each member of the group will think about the number to be made using the
different skills they have developed.
For example, Group A makes the number 54 using 5, 4, 6, 9, 8, 2 as:
1st member: 6 x 9 = 54, 46 + 8 = 54
2nd member: 9 x 8 – 4 x 5 + 2 = 54
3rd member: 52 + 8 – 6 = 54
4th member: 98 ÷ 2 + 5 = 54
Students can write their equations on their individual piece of paper.
Challenge your students to create as many combinations as possible — the group
who creates the most is the “winner”!
