              subtrACtion of 2-digit numbers

Example 1: Ravi bought 54 eggs and out of them 23 was rotten.
              How many eggs were good?

Solution: To know the number of good eggs, we tens Ones

              need to subtract 23 from 54. 5 4

Step 1. Write the smaller number below the bigger – 2 3
number according to the place value of digits.

Step 2. First subtract the ones.

                         tens Ones

                           5 4

                       – 2 3
                                  1

Step 3. Subtract the tens next.

                              tens Ones

                                5 4

                            – 2 3

                                3 1

Thus, there were 31 good eggs left with Ravi.

              Example 2: Subtract 43 from 65.
              Solution:

Step 1. Subtract the ones first. Step 2. Subtract the tens next.

                           tens Ones tens Ones

                             6 5 6 5

                         – 4 3 – 4 3
                                    2 2 2

              Thus, 65 – 43 = 22
