              Using Body parts

Long ago people used their body parts such as fingers, handspans, cubits, feet, etc.

              to measure lengths of objects.

                          handspan palm finger/digit cubit

                               pace footspan armspan

Inaya and Ishan are placing their handspans

along the stick to measure its length.

Inaya: Length of the stick is 5 handspans.

Ishan: Length of the stick is 7 handspans.

Think! Why are they measuring different

              number of handspans?

For correct measurement, we always use the Inaya Ishan
              same length object.

              Using small objects

Look at the following. Here, the length of a pencil is Thus, the length of the

measured using erasers. length of 10 erasers.

The pencil is 10 erasers long.
