Adding 2-digit And 1-digit numbers

There were 12 pencils in a drawer. Hazel placed 7 more pencils in the drawer. How

many pencils are there in total?

12 is a 2-digit number and 7 is a 1-digit number.

To add numbers 12 and 7, we follow these steps.
Step 1. Write the numbers one below Step 2. Add the tens.

There is no tens digit in the
second number.

2 ones + 7 ones = 9 ones So, write 1 in the tens place.
