              Subtraction

              Subtraction means taking away.

There were 10 pencils in the drawer. Aarushi
              used 5 of them.

How many pencils are left now?

In the given picture, we see 5 pencils are left.
The sign of subtraction is '–'. It is called minus.

For subtraction, we first write the bigger
number, put the minus sign and then write the

              smaller number below.

The above subtraction can be written as
                          10 – 5 = 5

It is read as ‘10 minus 5 is equal to 5’.

                       Practice time 4a

              1. Look at each picture and complete the subtraction sentences. One has been

                   done for you.

                   (a) (b) (c)

                             5 – 4 = 1 8 – 3 = 7 – 1 =

                   (d) (e) (f)

                             9 – 5 = 6 – 2 = 10 – 7 =

Teacher’s To strengthen the concept of taking away, involve the students with some concrete items. One student will pick up
Tip some items. Then he/she will give some of them to another student and count the remaining left with him/her.
