              VerticaL Subtraction

Numbers can be subtracted by writing one below the other. Such method of
              subtraction is called vertical subtraction.

In vertical subtraction, we write the bigger number above and the smaller one below.

              Example: Subtract 4 from 9.

Solution: Since 9 > 4, so we write the numbers as Draw the lines equal to the bigger
shown below. number. Cross the lines equal to
                                                                                    the smaller number. Count the
9 number of lines uncrossed which
                                                                                         gives the answer.
                           – 4
                               5

                           Thus, 9 – 4 = 5.

                       Practice time 4e

              1. Cross (7) out to subtract. One has been done for you.

                   (a) 5 (b) 7 (c) 8
                        – 3 – 5 – 4
                            2
                   (d) 9 (e) 6 (f) 5

                        – 2 – 6 – 4

              2. Subtract the following by drawing lines. One has been done for you.
                   (a) 4 (b) 8 (c) 3

                        – 3 – 7 – 1
                            1
                   (d) 7 (e) 6 (f) 9

                        – 7 – 4 – 3

              3. Write the numbers in column form in such a way that bigger number is above
and smaller number is below. Then subtract.

                   (a) 3 – 2 (b) 4 – 2 (c) 5 – 1 (d) 8 – 7
