              DIVISION AS EQUAL SHARING

              Division means equal sharing.

Christmas is a festival of joy and
happiness. Peter and his friends all

are waiting for Santa Claus. At the

              midnight, Santa Claus comes with
12 gift items for the children.

He shares all the gifts equally

              among the 4 children.

12 gift packets are distributed (shared) equally among 4 children. Each child gets
              3 gift packets.

Also, we can say 12 divided by 4 is 3.

              This can be written as 12 ÷ 4 = 3.
                                                                                 Quick Check
“12 ÷ 4 = 3” is called the division expression How many gifts each child could

or division fact for the statement “Twelve get if 12 gifts were shared among

divided by four is three”. 3 children only?

                    activity
Divide the class into groups of 2, 3, 4 and 6 students. Call out the groups one

by one in front of the class. Give them 24 or 36 seeds, beads or small objects and ask
them to share it among themselves. Speak aloud how many have they shared equally
among the themselves and how many each one got. Encourage them to write a division

fact on the blackboard for their distribution. Repeat the activity with other groups of
students with different number of beads or objects (that are divisible by the number of
               students called out).
