              3. 16 gulabjamuns are to be put in 4 plates. Can you do it by drawing gulabjamuns

                   on these plates?

                   Also, write the division fact.

              DIVISION BY REPEATED SUBTRACTION

Repeated subtraction can also be used for division.

Anil has 8 marbles. He puts 2 marbles into a bowl.

                                                           8 – 2 = 6 ...(1)

Then, he puts 2 marbles into second bowl.

                                                           6 – 2 = 4 ...(2)

He wants to fill the bowls with marbles.

So, he puts 2 marbles into third bowl

                                                           4 – 2 = 2 ...(3)

and finally, puts the remaining 2 marbles into the fourth bowl.

                                                           2 – 2 = 0 ...(4)

Here, 2 is subtracted 4 times from 8.

              Also, 8 – 2 – 2 – 2 – 2 = 0

Thus, division is actually repeated subtraction.

              We can write ‘subtracting 2 repeatedly 4 times’ as 8 ÷ 2 = 4.

               teacher’s
tip Strenthen the concept of repeated subtraction using some concrete items like pencils,
erasers, beads, etc. and inviting the children in groups of different numbers.
