              TERMS OF A DIVISION STATEMENT

              Consider the division statement 14 ÷ 2 = 7.

dividend: The number we divide is the dividend. Here, 14 is the dividend.

divisor: The number by which we divide is the divisor. Here, 2 is the divisor.

Quotient: The number we get as the answer is the quotient. Here, 7 is the quotient.

              LONG DIVISION METHOD

Two sisters share a packet of 12 crayons equally.

              So, each sister gets 12 ÷ 2 = 6 crayons. Before learning
                                                                                                long division
              We can write 12 ÷ 2 = 6 as: method, I must
                                                                                                revise times
                                                                                              table of 2 to 10.
                                      6 Quotient

              Divisor 2 1 2 Dividend
                                – 12
                                      0

It is known as Long division.

example 1: Divide 24 by 6 using the long division method.

Solution: Step 1. Arrange the numbers as shown.

Step 2. Read the 6 times table up to 24. Multiplication table tells that

there are 4 sixes in 24.

                              That is, 4 × 6 = 24.

Step 3. Write 4 (quotient) just above

the dividend 24, and the product 24
                              below the dividend.

Step 4. Subtract the product from the

                              dividend.

                              Thus, 24 ÷ 6 = 4
