Division of a number by 1

Put 10 bindis on 1 strip. Put 8 bindis on 1 strip.

10 ÷ 1 = 10 8 ÷ 1 = 8

Any number when divided by 1 gives the quotient as the number itself.

Division of 0 by any number

Put 0 bindis on 2 strips. Put 0 bindis on 3 strips.

0 ÷ 2 = 0 0 ÷ 3 = 0

0 divided by any number except 0 gives the quotient as 0.

Think and Answer l When we divide any non-zero number

1. Put 6 matchsticks in (a) 6 boxes and by itself, the quotient is 1.
(b) 1 box. How many matchsticks are there l When any number is divided by 1,
in each box? the quotient is the number itself.

2. Which one of the following is not possible? l When 0 is divided by any number
Give reason. except 0, the quotient is 0.
